One week after fellow freshman goalie Allison Nemeth won her second Ivy League Field Hockey Rookie of the Week honor, Princeton goalie Juliana Simon has earned her first league Rookie of the Week award.
Simon earned a start at No. 3 Maryland last Friday and fashioned an outstanding performance with 10 saves, including eight in the second half and overtime. She also saved a Maryland penalty stroke attempt early in the overtime period that extended the game, though the Terps would win the game 3-2 on another penalty stroke later in overtime.
"Juliana was big-time today, not just in the overtime," Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn said after the game. "People have been asking me about why I haven't just gone with just one of the two goalies, and I think you saw it today. I have confidence in either of them against anybody."
Simon also played the final 20 minutes in a 5-1 Princeton victory over Columbia Sunday, recording one save. The freshman from Berwyn, Pa., has started three games in 2003 and has a 2.95 goals-against average and .667 save percentage in five total appearances.
The Tigers, ranked No. 10 in the STX/NFHCA poll for the fourth straight week, play host to Cornell in an Ivy League game this Sat., Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium.
