Final Stats
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The No. 23 Princeton men's swimming and diving team, in the midst of its most intense and important training period of the season, tested itself Monday against a premier opponent. While No. 17 Pittsburgh held off Princeton 154.5-145.5, the Tigers had a number of strong performances and should feel good heading into the league season.
Princeton dug itself a hole in the diving competition, as Pittsburgh took the top three spots in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. The Tigers worked their way back into the meet with five individual wins and a superior relay to end the meet, but it was not enough.
Justin Chiles earned Princeton's first win by finishing the 200 free in 1:41.25. Chiles would also best teammate Will Reinhardt in the 100 free, winning the event in 46.17. Reinhardt earned Princeton added points with his second-place finish in 46.27. Reinhardt wasn't going to be topped in the 50 free, though, finishing ahead of a pair of Pittsburgh swimmers with a time of 21.19.
Senior Juan Valdivieso won the 200 butterfly in 1:50.39, while freshman Meir Hasbani was the class of the pool in the 400 IM, winning in 4:04.38. Hasbani finished second to Valdivieso in the 200 butterfly as well, finish .16 of a second behind his senior teammate.
The meet ended in style for Princeton, as the Tigers placed first (3:05.21) and second (3:07.17) in the 400 freestyle relay.
This was Princeton's first loss in 15 meets. It will look to get back on track when it entertains Dartmouth College at DeNunzio Pool on Jan. 25.
