CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Abby Taylor and Mia Link each scored early second-half goals for Virginia and Logan Carr had seven saves as the No. 18 Cavaliers held off Princeton, 2-1, in a field hockey game played at University Hall Turf Field Sunday afternoon.
After an evenly-played first half that ended scoreless, the Cavaliers (7-6) scored just 1:15 into the second half when Taylor took a pass from Allison Flynn and scored past Princeton goalie Allison Nemeth, making her first start of the season after recovering from a leg injury.
Virginia would add to its lead less than two minutes later, when Link's drive on a penalty-corner situation found the back of the net. Biffy Cornelison and Sarah Miller were credited with the assists.
Princeton (3-8) then began to dominate play after a timeout, however, and pulled within one goal at 2-1 when Kelly Darling took a pass from Lizzie Black and scored past Carr with 24:40 remaining. The Tigers would outshoot Virginia 10-3 in the second half and get six second-half penalty corners to just one for Virginia, but the Cavaliers got a key defensive save from Julianne Bojanic and four saves from Carr in the final 35 minutes to hold on for the win. Nemeth made two first-half saves for Princeton, which outshot Virginia 16-8 and had nine penalty corners to just six for the Cavaliers. Virginia won its second-straight game after a three-game losing skid, while the Tigers lost their second straight, each coming to a Top 20 opponent.
Princeton hosts Brown in an Ivy League game next Saturday at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers are 2-1 in the Ivy League...only Harvard is undefeated so far in league play.
