New York - Darren Spicer volleyed in a cross from Adrian Melville with 15:50 remaining to give the Princeton men's soccer team a big 1-0 win over Columbia Saturday afternoon in New York City. It was Princeton's first win over Columbia since the 1993 NCAA tournament and ended a 10-game winless streak against the Lions.
The win also improved Princeton to 6-3-3 overall and more importantly 2-0-1 in the Ivy League. Columbia fell to 2-8-2, 0-3.
Princeton is one of three teams unbeaten in the Ivy League, along with Penn (2-0) and Dartmouth (1-0-1), who meet Sunday in Hanover.
The best scoring chance of the first half came when Columbia's Jorrell Best one-timed a ball that Princeton goalkeeper Erik White was able to knock away for his only save of the game. The game stayed scoreless until the 75th minute, when Melville brought the ball down the right side and crossed it into the middle to Spicer, who cashed it in for the only goal of the day.
Spicer's goal was his Ivy League-leading ninth of the season.
Princeton hosts Harvard next Saturday.
Columbia outshot Princeton 9-4.
