The Princeton field hockey team looks for some confidence heading into a stretch of key Ivy League games when the Tigers travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face the 18th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers Sunday afternoon. Game time is noon at the University Hall Turf Field.
The Tigers (3-7) had perhaps their best overall weekend of the season last week, often dominating play against both Boston University and Richmond, but ended with a split after an early Richmond goal stood up in a 1-0 game. Virginia (6-6) ended a three-game losing streak with an 8-0 win over Division II Longwood Wednesday afternoon.
Princeton defeated Virginia last season at Class of 1952 Stadium, 3-1, in the first game for Tiger head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn.
Freshman Paige Schmidt was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week for games ending Oct. 3 after scoring the go-ahead goal for the Tigers in a 5-4 win over Boston University last Friday. Schmidt leads the Tigers in both shots (32) and shots on goal (23) her freshman season.
The Tigers have actually performed better on the road (2-2) than at home (1-5) so far this season, with Ivy League wins at Yale and Columbia and the losses coming at nationally-ranked Connecticut and Penn State. The game at Virginia is a bit of a homecoming for Princeton seniors Natalie and Alexis Martirosian, natives of Richmond.
Princeton has key Ivy League games against Brown, Harvard and Cornell on its upcoming schedule. Harvard is the lone undefeated team in the league as of today, while the Tigers, Dartmouth and Penn are all 2-1.
