Boston, Mass. - Sophomore Liz Keady scored three goals as the Princeton women's hockey team downed Northeastern 6-2 Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The Tigers reached the six-goal mark for the first time all season on the strength of four power-play goals. Sophomore Kim Pearce and Laura Watt also had three points for Princeton in the Tigers' eighth win of the season.
The Tigers (8-4-2; 3-3-1 ECACHL) dominated play in the first period, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and outshooting the Huskies 16-2. Northeastern (2-14-1; 1-4 Hockey East) found itself in early penalty trouble and gave Princeton a 5 on 3 early that the Tigers cashed in on at 1:38. Watt fed junior Heather Jackson in the slot from the point. Jackson got a shot to the net and Keady found the rebound and slid it through Northeastern goaltender Marisa Hourihan. Keady made it 2-0 just after the conclusion of another penalty almost six minutes later. She circled through the zone, the came in front to wrist a shot over the outstretched blocker of Hourihan. Watt and Pearce assisted on Keady's fifth of the season at 7:31. Princeton had four power plays in the period with 11 of its 16 shots coming with the man advantage.
After its slow start in the first period, Northeastern controlled much of the play in the second period, but was unable to crack Princeton junior goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel despite outshooting Princeton 21-4. Five Princeton penalties gave the Huskies the power-play advantage for almost half the period. The Princeton penalty kill was strong however, and limited Northeastern to just a few quality-scoring chances, and those were handled by Gaudiel. Thirteen of the 21 shots came on the power play for Northeastern.
Northeastern finally broke through on Princeton at the 3:10 mark of the third period when Missy Elumba scored on a one-timer in front of the Princeton net. Northeastern capitalized on a failed clearing attempt by Princeton as Lori DiGiacomo picked up the puck and fed Ashley Bielawski, who found Elumba for the goal. The goal snapped a shutout streak of 277:39 by the Princeton defense and Gaudiel that dated back to the first period against Connecticut on Nov. 27.
Princeton pressured right off the goal and when Marie Desrosiers got a major for hitting from behind at 5:11, the Princeton power-play unit came alive and scored three times in the ensuing power play. Pearce scored first at 6:00 to reassume a two-goal lead for Princeton. She redirected a shot by Watt through Hourihan. Sophomore Dina McCumber also drew an assist on Pearce's eighth goal of the season.
It only took 1:16 for Princeton to score again. This time freshman Brittany Salmon lifted a rebound over Hourihan to make it 4-1. Salmon's second of the year came off the rebound of a Jackson shot. Sophomore Chrissie Norwich also assisted on the goal.
Keady capped the long power play with her third of the game at 8:47. Keady received a cross-ice pass from Pearce in the neutral zone and then skated in on Hourihan and pick the top left corner over the glove to complete the hat trick. It was the first of her collegiate career. Norwich tallied her second assist of the game on the goal.
Northeastern got one of the goals back when Bielawski hammered a loose puck from Elumba and Desrosiers at 13:19.
Princeton completed the scoring at 17:28 of the third period when freshman Marykate Oakley stripped a Northeastern defenseman of the puck and wrapped it around and into the empty Husky net.
Gaudiel finished the game with 30 saves to improve to 8-4-2 on the season. Hourihan made 30 saves in the loss.
Princeton visits Boston College tomorrow at noon to complete the weekend. Princeton then resumes action on New Year's Day at New Hampshire.
