HACKENSACK, N.J. -- 15 lead changes and 13 ties. In a close game that came down to rebounds and free throws, the women's basketball team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 58-51 at Rothman Center on Thursday night. The Tigers improve to 5-5 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-8. Princeton won its third-consecutive game this season for the first time since the three-game win streak at the conclusion of the 1999-2000 season. Junior Katy O'Brien found junior Becky Brown posting with 1:50 left in the game and gave Princeton a two-point advantage, 53-51. Brown, who was fouled on the play missed the free throw but the Tigers got the rebound and freshman Meagan Cowher made a basket and earned herself a trip to the free throw line. Cowher's basket gave the Tigers breathing room and a five-point lead with 1:46 remaining in the nailbiter.
The Knights tied the game at 12 following a pair of threes from Megan Kirkland and Mills. Fairleigh Dickinson, then, took a brief one-point lead, 13-12 at the 10:52 mark, but a basket from Shelly Slemp and a steal by Elyse Umeda that lead to a fastbreak oppurtunity gave the Tigers the advantage once again at 17-15.
Cowher opened the second half with an old fashion three-point play. Fairleigh Dickinson's then scored five points, including a three from Erin Mills to tie the game at 33. Freshman Ali Prichard converted from outside to give the Tigers the 38-35 lead with under 14 minutes to play. The Knights then took the lead, 39-38, following a basket from Gayle Coatz. The Tigers and Knights then battled for the outright lead for the rest of the game until Brown's basket at the 1:50 mark. Brown finished the game with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Cowher scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Digovich recorded a season-high 12 rebounds and chipped in 11 points for her first double-double of the season. Princeton hosts Saint Peter's on Monday, January 3 at 7 p.m.
