Piscataway N.J. -- Sophomore Elyse Umeda scored 10 points in the second half, but it was too little too late as Princeton fell 68-46 to Rutgers, Wednesday night. The Tigers' record drops to 2-4, while Vivian Stringer earns win 700 and improves to 5-1 on the season.
Rutgers opened the game with an 18-0 run before junior Katy O'Brien hit a three from the top of the key in the 14th minute.
A backdoor play from O'Brien to freshman Meagan Cowher and hustle on a jump ball situation from Elyse Umeda on the following possession gave the Tigers momentum. Princeton went on a 6-0 run and cut the Scarlet Knights advantage to 25-16. The Tigers then went on a three minute scoring drought until Cowher scored on another backdoor cut. At half, Princeton trailed 33-20 following two free throws.
O'Brien had nine points, all from three-point range, leading into halftime. She finished with a team-high 15.
The second half opened with a seven point scoring spree by Umeda. She connected on a three from the left corner then made a lay-up off a steal at half court and found the basket on a breakaway lay-up off an inbounds play.
Rutgers' point guard Courtney Locke connected on her fifth three-pointer in the 16th minute and gave the Scarlet Knights a 51-29 advantage.
The Tigers cut the lead to 19 after a lay-up from Cowher, who finished with 12 points. Then at the 3:18 mark Rutgers opened its largest lead of the game, 66-40, following a good free throw from Ajavon Matee.
Both Umeda and O'Brien nailed a three in the closing minutes of the game.
Princeton returns to Jadwin Gym on Dec. 14 and hosts St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
