Princeton, N.J. - The women's water polo team opens its 2004 season at its home pool, hosting nine teams in the Princeton Invitational. After finishing last season at 22-7 overall and undefeated in the CWPA, the Tigers expect another successful year in '04.
The tournament begins Saturday morning with Princeton facing Marist in the first game at 9 a.m. The Tigers also play Harvard at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday and return on Sunday to face Michigan at 10 a.m. and George Washington at 5 p.m.
Princeton's main goal this year is to be in a position to win the Eastern Championship at the end of the year despite losing two All-Americas from last season's team.
"Our program is at a point where, regardless of whom we graduate, we still expect to be one of the best teams in the East," head coach Luis Nicolao says.
The few upperclassmen have the responsibility of continuing the winning tradition by showing the newcomers what being a Tiger is all about. Although the losses of Adele McCarthy-Beauvais and Jenny Edwards will be difficult, their four years at Princeton helped set a high standard that won't be compromised with their graduation. Sophomore Megan Donahue had an outstanding start to her career and finished her rookie season as the CWPA Rookie of the Year. Along with relying on Donahue, Princeton looks to the junior class to have a big year. Madeline McCarthy comes off a strong year in the cage when she established herself as one of the best goalies in the East. Kathryn Parolin and Kelly Melia-Teevan are also expected to have breakout years.
