PRINCETON - The No. 8 women's hockey team scored a power play goal, a shorthanded goal and an even-strength goal to earn a 3-1 win over Colgate Saturday afternoon and a weekend sweep in ECAC action. Heather Jackson scored the game winner in a shorthanded situation, and Megan Van Beusekom came one second away from a shutout.
"I thought we played well in both games this weekend," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "This should give us good confidence. We played with good emotion today. When we play with heart and grit, we're a tough team to beat."
Princeton took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, thanks to an early score by Lisa Rasmussen. The goal was initiated by a shot by Kim Pierce, which was stopped by Rebecca Lahar but shot off her pad and across the goal mouth. Rasmussen beat the Colgate defense to the puck and put it in at the 5:49 mark. Colgate got a chance to even it in the second period when Chrissy Norwich was put in the penalty box, but a failed clear was tipped by Angela Gooldy and and recovered by Jackson. She skated in alone on Lahar and beat her for the 2-0 lead. The Tigers added an insurance goal later on a perfect give-and-go between Laura Watt and Pierce. Watt sent an entry pass in from the right circle and received the pass back as she cut in front of Lahar. Her shot went just under the pipe for the 3-0 lead.
Van Beusekom made 17 saves in the game and was headed for a shutout before a centering pass by Allison Paiano found Amanda Barre just in front of the goal crease. Barre tipped it high, above Van Beusekom's shoulder, for the final goal as the clock expired.
Princeton moves to 16-6-0 on the season, 9-4-0 in the ECAC, and will look to improve on that mark Friday night when it takes on the Vermont Catamounts.
