PRINCETON - Gretchen Anderson scored twice and Megan Van Beusekom made 29 saves as the Princeton women's hockey team moved a big step closer to home ice in the postseason with a 5-2 win over Dartmouth. The win gives Princeton 22 points in the league, which would tie it for second with the loser of Saturday's Harvard-St. Lawrence game.
The top four teams in the ECAC will host a weekend series in the first round of the playoffs. Entering Saturday, Harvard and St. Lawrence each had 22 points, while Dartmouth had 21 and Princeton had 20. Brown had 19 points, but like the other three teams ahead of Princeton, it has played one less game than the Tigers. Thus, every point is that much more important for Princeton. The Tigers certainly came out of the gate with the necessary intensity for a playoff game. After struggling early Friday night against Vermont, the Tigers scored three goals in the opening stanza to open up a 3-0 lead. The opening goal was scored by Laura Watt, who found space in front of the net and took a pass from Anderson. Watt shot the puck through traffic and past starting goaltender Christine Capuano, who lasted only one period in the game.
The top line of Lisa Rasmussen, Heather Jackson and Anderson was the best on the ice in this game, and they connected for a 2-0 lead at the 15:09 mark. Jackson handled the puck into the zone and drew the defenders to her. She left the puck for Rasmussen, who went the other way and beat Capuano high over her right shoulder for the goal. Rasmussen also set up the third goal by beating two Dartmouth defenders to a puck that was shot down the Dartmouth end. Capuano decided to play it late and couldn't be Rasmussen to it. The Tiger captain fired it off the goaltender's pads, and the puck redirected to a hustling Anderson, who found the open net for a 3-0 lead.
Dartmouth scored on the power play in the second period when Katie Weatherstone found Tiffany Hagge alone on the right side, and Hagge beat Van Beusekon. The momentum would be short-lived though, as Princeton would score its second of two power-play goals less than two minutes later. Kim Pearce sent the puck to Watt on the blue line. As Watt collected the pass, Anderson lost her defender and snuck behind the goal, where Watt found her on the doorstep. Anderson fired it home for the 4-1 lead.
Liz Keady and Weatherstone traded goals during a chippy third period. Keady's goal was assisted by Kim Pearce, who had two goals on Friday and two assists Saturday.
Princeton was 2-for-2 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 1-for-9. Dartmouth outshot Princeton 31-24. Stephanie Cochran came in for Capuano to begin the second period and ended up making 11 saves over the final two periods.
Princeton will host Yale Wednesday night.
