Richmond, Va. - The Princeton baseball team dropped a pitcher's duel Sunday afternoon 1-0 to Virginia Commonwealth at The Diamond. The Rams scored what turned out to be the only run of the game in the third inning and it was all pitching from there. Freshman Gavin Fabian pitched all eight innings for the Tigers allowing just one run on six hits.
The Rams scored the run after a lead off single. Two groundouts put the runner on third and he scored on another single.
Princeton's best chance to score came in the fourth inning when senior Eric Fitzgerald and freshman Sal Iacono led off the inning with back-to-back singles but Virginia Commonwealth was able to get the next three batters out to end the inning. Princeton also had a base-runner in the ninth when freshman Aaron Prince, pinch hitting, drew a one-out walk, but the Tigers were unable to get him home as VCU clinched the 1-0 win.
Matt Prendergast pitched seven innings to earn the win, while Fabian tossed eight innings in defeat. He fell to 1-1 with the loss and lowered his ERA to 2.25.
The game was the final contest of Princeton's 11-game Spring Break road trip. Princeton was 5-6 over the week after splitting four games at Virginia Commonwealth this weekend. The Tigers now stand at 8-6 on the season and resume action next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Stony Brook. The two teams meet Saturday in Princeton and on Sunday on Long Island.
