Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook with a 4-3 win in the nightcap of Saturday afternoon at Clarke Field. The Tigers used a two-run sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead en route to their 10th victory of the season.
The game did not start out well for the Tigers as Stony Brook jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With one away, Justin Michalek singled down the left field line and and scored when Isidro Fortuna homered to left center. Sophomore pitcher Erik Stiller dug in from their, limiting the Seawolves to just four more hits over the course of seven innings. He struck out seven in the game and is now 2-1 on the season.
Princeton cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Senior Steve Young led off when he bunted for a base hit. After an out, Young went to second on a groundout. With two outs, Salini singled through the right side to score Young and make the score 2-1. The score remained there until the bottom of the sixth when Princeton pieced together a rally to take the lead. Freshman Sal Iacono led off and hit a high pop-up to the shortstop. However Gary Novakowski could not handle it and it fell. Junior Will Venable, appearing today for the first time this season, then ripped a double down the right field line and Iacono moved to third. Senior Ryan Reich then hit a grounder to third. The thirdbaseman went to make a play on Iacono, but he made it to the bag on time and Reich was safe at first with a single. On the next play, sophomore Zach Wendkos reached on a fielder's choice and Iacono was out at home. With one out, freshman Aaron Prince then drew a bases-loaded walk to knot the game at 2-2. Princeton then jumped ahead when Young hit a sacrifice fly.
Ahead 3-2, Princeton added an insurance run in the seventh. With one out, junior B.J. Szymanski hit a triple to right center and scored on the following play when Salini singled to left field.
Stony Brook chipped one run off the lead in the eighth when Andrew Larson hit a solo home run to left center, but that was all the Seawolves could muster as junior Brian Kappel closed out the win by getting the final six outs for his fourth save of the season.
The Tigers continue the weekend at Stony Brook for a pair of double headers tomorrow.
