Norfolk, Va. - The Princeton baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Old Dominion with a 9-5 win over the Monarchs Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex. The win lifts Princeton to 3-0 on the season and is the best start for the Tigers since opening the 1989 season with four victories.
Freshman Gavin Fabian made his first career start for the Tigers and pitched six complete innings, allowing two Monarch runs on eight hits. Old Dominion opened the scoring with a run in the fourth inning. Princeton answered back to even the game at 1-1 in the sixth, only to have ODU reestablish the one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior Worth Lumry pitched the seventh for the Tigers and earned the win after striking out two as the Tigers overcame the ODU lead and belted out three runs to grab a 4-2 lead after eight. Princeton scored five more runs in the ninth to make the score 9-2 before Old Dominion added three in the bottom half of the ninth to make the final score 9-5. Lumry is now 1-0 on the season and junior Brian Kappel earned the save after he came in to pitch the final two innings of the game.
For the third consecutive game, junior B.J. Szymanski led the Tigers offensively as went 3-for-5 with two triples, four RBIs and a run. In the three-game series, Szymanski was 8-for-15 with eight RBIs, five runs, two home runs, two triples and a double.
Seniors Ryan Reich and Tim Lahey each added a pair of RBIs in the win and sophomore Andrew Salini had an RBI as well.
The Tigers look to continue their perfect start to the season on Friday afternoon when they begin their 11-game Spring Break road trip at Duke. The Princeton record for consecutive victories to open a season is 18 and was set in 1923.
