Led by a 70 from Jason Gerken and a 72 by Creighton Page, the Princeton men's golf team held off charging Towson to win the 2004 Princeton Invitational by four strokes at Springdale Golf Club Saturday afternoon.
Gerken's 70 was the second-best score of the day on the 6,390-yard, par-71 layout and helped the Tigers to a 292 for the day and a 583 for the two-day tournament, four strokes better than Towson's 587. Georgetown, Temple, George Washington and Rutgers all finished within 12 strokes of the lead.
Navy's Billy Hurley, who took a two-stroke lead into the second round thanks to a Friday 68, shot a 71 Saturday to finish at three-under-par 139 and win the tournament by three strokes over Gerken and William & Mary's Gary Barton, who each finished at even-par 142. Princeton's Page finished alone in fourth place with a score of one-over-par 143, while Georgetown's James Farrah and Towson's Alex Brueggemann tied for fifth at 144. Brueggemann shot a 68 Saturday afternoon, the best round of the day.
John Locke shot a 75 for Princeton Saturday and finished ninth overall, while the Tigers' John Sawin tied for 36th place at 10-over-par 152.
The Princeton "Black" team finished in 21st place but got strong play from Jesse Dixon, who shot a 74 Saturday and finished tied for 23rd and eight-over-par 150 for the tournament.
George Mason, Navy, James Madison and Liberty rounded out the top 10 in the team standings. Rutgers' Brent Pittman and Temple's Logan Perry finished tied for seventh individually at 145, while four players finished tied for ninth at +4 146.
