Princeton, N.J. - Kristin Del Calvo hit her second home run of the year as the Princeton softball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Seton Hall at the Class of 1895 Field. The Pirates won 3-0 and 7-2 to improve to 29-13 overall while the Tigers dropped to 20-17.
In Game One, Princeton and Seton Hall battled through five quick and scoreless innings before a runner reached home. With two outs in the sixth, Katie Pierce put the Pirates on the board with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left-center fence that scored Danielle Steinseifzer, who was hit by the pitch.
Calli Varner relieved Erin Snyder to start the seventh but Seton Hall got one more run off two hits to take a 3-0 lead in its final at-bat. Catcher Meg Berry launched an RBI double into the deep left corner, scoring Lindsay Trottier, who singled. Snyder, who dropped to 9-10 on the mound, struck out three and gave up just three hits and one walk in the first six innings.
The Tigers left seven runners on base and got four hits off left-handed pitcher Megan Myer (15-4), one apiece from Wendy Bingham, Stephanie Steel, Kristin Del Calvo and Cristina Cobb-Adams.
Seton Hall wasted no time in Game Two when Caitlin White led off the first inning with a single to center field, advanced on two outs and scored off a Pierce rocket past the shortstop. The Pirates led 1-0 after one.
In the second, Seton Hall loaded the bases with three singles before Steinseifzer forced in a run when she was hit by Melissa Finley's pitch. D'Arcy Djakalovic singled to right field to score the second run of the inning for a 3-0 Seton Hall lead.
Kristin Del Calvo hit a solo homer, her second this season, out of right center field in the fourth for Princeton's first run of the day. But the Pirates answered in the fifth with a homer of their own, a two-run dinger by Laura Taylor, her seventh, for a 5-1 lead.
The Tigers got one back with a Steel RBI single up the right side in the fifth. Lueke led off the inning with a bunt, advanced to second on an out and moved to third on Finley sac fly before Steel drove her home.
In the sixth, Seton Hall pinch hitter McKenzie Richards hit a triple straight to center field to score Caitlyn White, who singled, before Djakalovic sent her home with a double to right center. The Pirates held their 7-2 through the seventh.
Princeton's Amelia Runyan, who relieved Finley after the second inning, had four strikeouts in four innings before Calli Varner finished the game on the mound. Bingham finished 2 for 4, Cobb-Adams went 2 for 3, and four other Tigers had one hit apiece. Princeton and Seton Hall combined for 17 stranded runners.
Princeton plays its final home doubleheaders this weekend against Cornell on Saturday, April 24 at 1 p.m. and against Columbia on Sunday at 1 p.m.
