Princeton, N.J. - The women's water polo team (22-7), hot off a Southern Championship and boasting a four-game winning streak, looks to avenge four of its losses in rematches this weekend at the 2004 Eastern Championships at Bucknell.
Princeton enters the 12-team Eastern Championships as the No. 5 seed behind Michigan, Hartwick, Indiana and Brown. The Tigers have lost just four games on the East Coast this season, and all four came to the four teams seeded above them at Easterns. The other three losses came to West Coast teams during Princeton's Spring Break trip to California.
Princeton, which has won 10 of its last 11 games, meets No. 12 Villanova on Friday, April 23 at 4:40 p.m. with the winner advancing to play Brown at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Tigers are 3-0 against the Wildcats this season. The Eastern Championships continue through Saturday evening and Sunday morning until the title game at 2:50 p.m.
The Tigers are the top seed from the South, as they cruised past Villanova 13-8 and Maryland 15-2 before defeating George Washington for the fifth time this season in the Southern championship game, 7-6. Princeton also went 4-0 at Inter-Regionals and finished third at the ECAC Championships this season. The Tigers defeated Iona 8-4 in the first game of the ECACs but fell to host Brown 6-1 to put them in the consolation game. Princeton defeated George Washington 14-3 to claim third place.
Freshman Elyse Colgan leads the offense with 61 goals while her classmate Jazmin Brown is second in scoring with 47 goals and 17 assists. Sophomore Megan Donahue has 38 goals and team-highs in assists (19) and steals (57) and freshman Danielle Carlson adds 30 goals, 17 assists and 50 steals.
Junior Madeline McCarthy leads the goalkeeping crew with 52 saves and 10 steals while senior Lauren Lister and freshman Shannon DeVore combine for 61 saves.
The Tigers have won only one Eastern Championship (2000) in their seven-year history as a varsity program. Their 2004 Southern title was their third all-time, with the other two championships coming in 1999 and 2001.
