Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team opened the Ivy League season with a convincing 10-2 win over Dartmouth in the first game of a league doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Clarke Field. Sophomore Andrew Salini's three-run homer put the Tigers up 3-0 in the first and Princeton never looked back in the win.
Princeton wasted little time in taking control of the opening game of the doubleheader. Senior Steve Young led off with a single up the middle and junior B.J. Szymanski drew a walk to put two runners on for sophomore Andrew Salini. Salini stepped in and blasted the first pitch well over the wall in right center for a three-run homerun . Princeton extended its lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a pair of runs off one hit and two Dartmouth errors. The inning started when sophomore Stephen Wendell reached on a fielding error by Dartmouth third baseman Thomas Myette. A fielder's choice put sophomore Matthew Becker on base and Wendell was out at second. Young then hit a grounder to second base but another error, this time by second baseman Josh Bailey, turned what could have been an inning-ending double play into Princeton having runners on first and second. A groundout by Fitzgerald moved the runners to second and third. That paid off when Szymanski came to the plate and hit a sharp single through the right side after fouling off three 2-2 pitches.
With the five-run lead, junior Ross Ohlendorf took control as he limited Dartmouth to two runs on seven hits through seven innings. Ohlendorf pitched his second consecutive complete game win and struck out eight in the game. He is now 4-1 on the season.
Princeton added five runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. With one away, junior Adam Balkan tripled to right center. Dartmouth got the next out, but a two-out rally led to five runs. Wendell hit a bloop single to left field to score Balkan. Becker then singled to center to move Wendell to third. He was then able to score as Young singled through the right side. Another single, this time off the bat of senior Eric Fitzgerald scored Becker. Szymanski then capped the inning with a two-run triple to make the score 10-2.
