Dartmouth Posts 5-2 Win Over Baseball to Split Doubleheader

Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team fell to Dartmouth 5-2 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Clarke Field. Down 1-0 in the fourth Princeton came back to take a 2-1 lead, but a four-run Dartmouth fifth lifted the Big Green to the win.
Dartmouth jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as the Big Green capitalized on a pair of Tiger errors. Thomas Myette reached on an error and scored when Jeff Speights reached on a second error.
Princeton strung together four hits for two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Adam Balkan led off the inning with a double to right center. He scored when the next batter, junior B.J. Szymanski hit an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Sophomore Andrew Salini then gorunded out t push Szymanski over to third. That brought up freshman Sal Iacono who singled through the left side to score Szymanski and give Princeton the 2-1 lead. A walk and a double by junior Will Venable loaded the bases, but Dartmouth pitcher Josh Faiola got out of the jam with a bases-loaded pop-up to end the inning. That proved important as the Big Green responded with four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. After getting the first two batters of the inning out on grounders, Scott Shirell drew a walk and then stole second. Myette singled to score Shirrell to knot the game at two runs apiece. Ed Lucas then doubled to put three runners aboard for Jeff Speights who hit a three-run home run to left field to give Dartmouth the three-run advantage.

Sophomore Erik Stiller started the game and pitched seven innings. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on three hits. He struck out four and walked three. Senior Brian Biegen pitched the final two innings and allowed no hits and struck out two. Faiola pitched eight innings to earn the win and Nicholas Peay got the save.
Princeton continues the weekend tomorrow afternoon against Harvard. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
