Steve Dolan, who led the men's and women's track & field and cross country programs at The College of New Jersey to unprecedented success over the past 11 seasons, has been named the assistant coach for men's track & field and cross country at Princeton.
Dolan, 34, the head coach of both the men's and women's programs at TCNJ since 1993, guided the Lions to a sweep of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's and women's meets in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field for the seventh straight season in 2003-04. He also led the Lions women's cross country team to its ninth straight Top 15 finish at the NCAA Division III championships and led the men to their sixth consecutive Top 20 finish at that same NCAA cross country meet.
"We are excited to have someone of Steve's caliber and experience join our staff," says Princeton men's track & field head coach Fred Samara. "He has been a head coach for 11 years, and his results at TCNJ speak for themselves. He is an enthusiastic and talented coach who will be a great fit here at Princeton." In 11 seasons at TCNJ, Dolan coached 61 All-America selections who combined for 126 separate All-America awards. He was honored as the NCAA Division III Regional Coach of the Year 12 times, including this past spring when he was named the Atlantic Region Men's and Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year, and won NJAC Coach of the Year honors 14 different times.
In addition to the national success of the men's and women's cross country teams at TCNJ, Dolan also led the Lions' track & field teams to outstanding finishes nationally and regionally. The men's team finished fifth at the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor Track championships and 24th at this past year's outdoor NCAA meet. The women finished fifth at the NCAA outdoor meet this past spring, were second at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) meet and won their 12th straight NJAC outdoor title in 2004.
A native of Bloomington, Minn., outside Minneapolis, Dolan is a 1992 graduate of the University of St. Thomas (Minn.). He was the 1992 NCAA Division III national champion in the decathlon and the 1991 runner-up in that event. The most valuable performer for the Tommies in both 1991 and 1992, he led St. Thomas to a third-place finish in the 1992 NCAA Division III championships and set school records in the decathlon, pentathlon and javelin. A cum laude graduate of St. Thomas with a bachelor's degree in business administration, he was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
Dolan and his wife, Nicole, have two children: Timothy, age five, and Sean, age three.
