The Princeton women's volleyball team begins its 2004 season Friday afternoon when it starts action at the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore.
The Tigers play Wagner and host Morgan State on Friday, then finish the tournament with matches against Bucknell and St. Francis (NY) Saturday.
While the Tigers as a team are looking to take back the Ivy League title that eluded them in 2003, head coach Glenn Nelson will be looking to reach a personal milestone only two other coaches in Princeton history have reached. Nelson needs just 16 victories for 500 career wins at Princeton, a number previously reached only by softball coaching legend Cindy Cohen (560) and Hall of Fame men's basketball coach Pete Carril (514).
Nelson's 2004 team has all but one starter returning from a year ago, when Princeton finished 17-6 overall and 11-3 in Ivy League play.
Senior Alex Brown, a versatile middle blocker, and junior Lauren Grumet, an outstanding outside hitter, both earned first-team All-Ivy honors last year and will lead the offense in 2004.
Setter Jenny Senske also returns to direct the offense, while sophomore libero Jenny McReynolds will control the defense for the Tigers. Both players were honorable mention All-Ivy picks last year.
Princeton plays in the Colgate Invitational next weekend before playing its first home match Tues., Sept. 21, against Lafayette at Dillon Gym.
