BALTIMORE - A balanced attack throughout the starting lineup helped the Princeton women's volleyball team get off to a quick start at the Morgan State Tournament.
Princeton swept through the tournament, losing only two games along the way. The Tigers opened their 2004 season with a 3-1 win over Wagner (20-30, 30-16, 30-15, 30-22), followed by a 3-0 win over Morgan State (30-16, 32-30, 30-24) and a 3-1 win over Bucknell (30-15, 22-30, 30-19, 31-29). The weekend ended with a 3-0 win over St. Francis (30-17, 30-14, 30-18).
The Tigers found statistical leaders throughout their starting lineup. Junior outside hitter Lauren Grumet led the team with 50 kills and averaged 3.57 per game. Senior co-captain and middle hitter Alex Brown, a first-team All-Ivy selection last season, had 44 kills and led Princeton with a .326 attack percentage (with a minimum of 20 kills). Brown led Princeton in attack percentage last year as well.
The offense continues to run through junior setter Jenny Senske, who averaged 9.45 assists in the three matches she played. Freshman Emily Turner, who will serve as Senske's backup, played well in a start against Morgan State, averaging more than 13 assists per game.
Junior Lauren Loban, who has replaced Kellie Cramm '04 in the starting lineup, averaged 3.0 digs per game in the first three matches. She has also chipped in with 39 kills. Sophomore libero Jenny McReynolds leads the team with 3.43 digs oer game.
Princeton will travel to Colgate next weekend for the challening Colgate Invitational.
The four opening wins for Princeton give head coach Glenn Nelson 488 total wins at Princeton. He needs 12 more victories to become the third coach ever at Princeton to win 500 games.
