HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Princeton women's volleyball team, fresh off last weekend's sweep of the Morgan State Tournament, begins play tonight at the Colgate Invitational. The 5:00 match against the Raiders is available live on the internet.
The audio link can be found at http://www.sportsjuice.com/providers/colgate. It will also be available on the front page of www.GoPrincetonTigers.com.
Princeton opened its 2004 season with a 4-0 record, winning 12 of 14 games last weekend at the Morgan State Tournament. Senior Lauren Loban, the lone new starter on this team, was named tournament MVP after providing key numbers in both the offensive and defensive categories.
The remainder of the starting lineup includes setter Jenny Senske, outside hitter Lauren Grumet, opposite player Ashley Weber, libero Jenny McReynolds and middles Brittany Wood and Alex Brown. Those six were key players in last season's run for the Ivy League title, which ended on the final day of the season. Princeton finished in second place in 2003, but has the returning talent to make another run at the title.
A quick start would put Princeton in very strong position going into the Ivy League season, and this tournament will give Princeton its strongest test of the season so far. Princeton and Colgate played a tight match last season with the Raiders pulling a win out in five games. Tonight's match is expected to be another close one.
Princeton will face St. John's tomorrow at 10 a.m. and Siena at 3 p.m. St. John's also defeated Princeton last season and will likely enter this tournament as the favorite.
A subplot of the season continues to be Glenn Nelson's charge to 500 wins. The longtime women's volleyball coach would be the third coach ever at Princeton to break the 500-win plateau with 12 more wins this season.
Princeton will make its home debut Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Lafayette.
