Hartford, Conn. - Princeton's women's soccer team spent the weekend in Connecticut and turned out to be highly offensive guests.
Esmeralda Negron scored twice and Kristina Fontanez and Diana Matheson scored once each to lead Princeton to a 4-0 win at Hartford Sunday afternoon. Princeton outshot Hartford 32-4.
The win came two days after Princeton's 3-0 win at Yale Friday night. The games marked the first time Princeton has scored at least seven goals in back-to-back road games in Julie Shackford's 10 years as Tiger head coach and the first time any Princeton team has done so since the Tigers scored five at Villanova and three at Hartford in 1984. "It was a very good weekend for us," Shackford said. "We played seven games this month, and six of them were on the road. It'll be good to get home."
Princeton improved to 6-1 with the win, while Hartford, a perennial America East power, fell to an uncharacteristic 1-6-1. Next up for Princeton will be Dartmouth at home Saturday (1 p.m.); Dartmouth ended Princeton's three-year run as Ivy champion a year ago.
Princeton's win over Yale was in its first Ivy game of the year. The Tigers and Bulldogs played a scoreless first 55 minutes before Princeton exploded for three goals in the final 35 and four more Sunday, making it seven goals in 125 minutes.
Matheson started the scoring 15 minutes in against Hartford when she scored her fourth of her freshman season, this one a shot inside the top right post off an assist from Maija Garnaas.
Negron made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when she scored an unassisted goal, and she added another unassisted goal early in the second half. Negron's two goals gave her a team-best five for the season and left her with 32 for her career, nine away from Linda DeBoer's 20-year-old school record. Negron, who is second all-time at Princeton in goals and points, has 72 career points, 19 away from DeBoer.
Fontanez scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Emily Behncke to complete the scoring.
Emily Vogelzang made two saves in 75 minutes before giving way to Maren Dale to complete the shutout, Princeton's fifth of the year. Stephanie Doyle made 16 saves for the Hawks.
