Some of the time Monday night against Haverford, Princeton looked like a team that hadn't played in 19 days. But the Tigers also looked like themselves plenty of the time, an encouraging sign for head coach Joe Scott and his Tigers as they finally enter Ivy League play.
Princeton defeated the Fords 60-33 in front of 1,718 at Jadwin Gym, shooting 60% from the field in the second half and using a 20-6 run in the final 12 minutes to make it a rout, but Scott knows the truly important results begin with Friday's night Ivy opener against Brown.
"It's hard to play when you haven't played in a while, just from a standpoint of competing," said Scott. "But this gives us something to look at heading into the league. We have three days to prepare for Brown, and I'm glad it's not any longer than that." Though the Tigers (9-5) struggled on the offensive end at times and committed 11 turnovers, Princeton shined on the defensive end Monday night, holding the Fords (6-9) to just 34% shooting and forcing 18 turnovers. Judson Wallace had 13 points and eight rebounds in just 20 minutes, while Andre Logan had 11 points, four assists and three rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.
"It doesn't matter who we're playing," said Wallace, "it's important for us to try to put a full 40 minutes together. "We had some good parts tonight and some parts where we struggled, and we'll need to get better for this weekend."
Logan shot 3 for 4 from the field and 2 for 2 from three-point range after entering the game just 1 for 7 from the field and 0 for 6 from beyond the arc in five games.
"It's starting to come along," said Logan, who missed Princeton's first seven games this season after a third knee surgery in November. "My role this year is going to be to help this team win a championship in whatever way I can."
All 15 Princeton players who dressed saw action, and 11 of them scored. The Tigers shot 51% for the game and outrebounded the Fords 28-20.
Mike Kelly led the Fords with seven points, while Mark Gabriel and Jeremy Bass each had six points. Haverford was playing its second game in less than 24 hours after winning at home against Franklin & Marshall Sunday night.
Haverford's 33 points were the fewest by a Princeton opponent since the Tigers defeated Western Maryland 78-24 three seasons ago. The Tigers improved to 20-0 in their annual post-exam game against an NCAA Division III opponent, with the average margin of victory in those games better than 30 points.
Princeton's matchup with Brown Friday night will be the Ivy League opener for both teams. Brown's matchup with travel partner Yale Saturday night was postponed due to this weekend's blizzard and will be made up Feb. 22.
