PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Becky Brown tallied her third 20-point game in her last four contests and led Princeton past the Black Knights of Army, 64-53, Wednesday night in Jadwin Gym. The Tigers improve to 7-5, while Army falls to 6-6 on the season.
Brown fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 23 points and nine rebounds. She shot 11-16 from the floor and tallied two blocks in the game. Freshman Meagan Cowher garnered her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Katy Digovich scored 10 points.
Princeton went on an 11-1 run to open the second stanza after trailing at halftime. Cowher scored the first four points off lay-ups to give the Tigers the lead back, 31-30. Digovich nailed a three-pointer, her first in three games, to give the orange and black a 36-30 lead with 18:26 remaining.
Junior Katy O'Brien earned a trip to the foul line and went 2-2 with just under 16 minutes left and increased the lead to 44-36.
The Tigers took their, then, largest lead of the game when sophomore Elyse Umeda lobbed a pass to Brown while posting, 46-36.
With time winding down on the shot clock, Umeda drove from the top of the key and floated a jumper at the 8:12 mark, which was the first Princeton field goal in over six minutes of action and stopped a 5-1 run by Army.
Cowher upped the Tiger lead to 12, 54-42, again following a lay-up with 6:27 left in the game. Brown halted another 5-0 run for the Black Knights with a basket at the 3:52 mark.
Sophomore Shelly Slemp penetrated the Army defense and scored with 38 seconds left on the clock to give the Tigers a 63-49 cushion.
Army shot 7-15 before from the foul line before going 4-4 in the last minute. Cara Enright led Army with 12 points and Hansen chipped in 11.
Brown got the Tigers on the scoreboard first with a lay-up, while Anna Wilson converted from outside the arc for the Black Knight's first points of the game.
The score was 8-3 after a good jumper from Digovich at the 16:32 mark. Army then rallied a 7-2 run courtesy of an open lay-up for Shavonne Holden to tie the game at 10 eight minutes into the first half.
Brown scored 10 straight points for Princeton and gave the Tigers an 18-13 advantage at the 10:12 mark. Both teams went scoreless for three minutes before Brown made a field goal, netting the score at 20-13.
The momentum shifted when Jen Hansen of Army made a three-pointer and was rewarded with a trip to the foul line for a four-point play with just under five minutes to play in the half. A lay-up from Enright on the Black Knights next possession tied the game at 24.
Army took the lead, 27-26, following Wilson's second make from outside. Brown went to the charity stripe on the next play and went 1-2, but Holden's basket gave the Black Knights a two-point advantage at the break, 29-27.
O'Brien tallied six rebounds and six assists in the game. The Tigers scored 42 points in the paint and 14 points of Army's turnovers.
Princeton will break for finals and return to action on Jan. 25 when they travel to Easton, Pa. to face Lafayette at 7 p.m.
