FLUSHING, N.Y. - Princeton junior Laura Trimble won the D1 Singles Flight at the USTA National Tennis Center Women's College Invitational Monday with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) victory against Virginia's Amanda Rales in the championship match.
Trimble had advanced to the finals thanks to a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Yale's Lillian Nguyen Monday morning. She was forced to play in both the semifinals and finals Monday due to wet conditions on Sunday night.
Trimble also joined with teammate Alison Hashmall to win the B1 Doubles Flight earlier in the weekend. Hashmall and Trimble defeated three of the top four seeded teams in the bracket, including the top seeds from Boston College by an 8-2 score in the quarterfinals, on the way to that victory. They defeated the No. 4 seeds from Virginia, Caroline Hammond and Kristen James, in the finals, winning 8-6 after trailing 5-2 and 6-3.
Due to the inclement weather during the weekend, the singles and doubles draws were each split. The tournament featured players from five teams that finished among the national top 20 a year ago.
Senior Jessica Siebel reached the semifinals of the B2 Singles draw, defeating Harvard's Cindy Chu and Brown's Amanda Saiontz in the first two rounds before losing a close match to No. 3 seed Carol Saige of Clemson, 7-5 and 6-4.
In doubles, Siebel and teammate Joanna Roth defeated a seeded team from Virginia in the first round of the A2 bracket before falling in the quarterfinals.
