Pearce Scores in Overtime to Lift Princeton to 2-1 Win Against Vermont

Buffalo, N.Y. - Junior Kim Pearce scored with 23 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Princeton women's hockey team to a 2-1 win over Vermont on Sunday afternoon at the Nichols School Ice Rink. Pearce scored both of Princeton's goals in the game as the Tigers picked up their first win of the 2005-06 season.
Princeton is 1-0-1 overall following the win as both games this weekend needed overtime. Saturday's game with Boston College ended deadlocked at 2-2.
On Sunday, after a scoreless first period in which Princeton outshot Vermont 7-1, the Tigers broke through on Vermont goalkeeper Shivaun Siegl when Pearce scored with just 32 seconds left in the second period. The goal was assisted by junior Dina McCumber.
Vermont's Kate Lesniak scored the only goal of the third period when she scored on the power play. All three goals scored against Princeton this season have come on the power play. From there the game ended with both teams deadlocked, despite Princeton holding a 32-12 shot advantage through 60 minutes.
Princeton came out in overtime looking for the win and fired six shots on the Vermont net before the seventh beat Siegl to lift Princeton to the win. The goal came from Pearce and was assisted by McCumber and freshman Katherine Dineen.
Princeton senior goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel made 11 saves for the win, while Siegl stopped 37 shots in the loss.
Princeton is back in action next weekend for the start of the ECAC Hockey League schedule. Princeton vists Dartmouth on Friday night at 7 p.m.
