Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton field hockey team outshot Hofstra 18-8 and had 14 more corner chances than the Pride, but the Tigers could not solve Hofstra goalkeeper Jessica Cowperthwait as Hofstra defeated Princeton 3-0 Friday night at Class of 1952 Stadium. Charlia Warner's goal in the 16th minute was the deciding goal in the game.
The loss drops Princeton to 5-6 overall on the season. Princeton remains 4-0 in Ivy League play.
The game started with play going back-and-forth in a steady rainfall. Princeton had the first corner of the night just two minutes into the game, but sophomore Paige Schmidt's shot was off the mark high.
Hofstra's first good scoring chance came 15 minutes into the game when Warner grabbed the ball along the near line. She worked her way along the end line towards the cage and was able to draw Princeton junior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth to her, before wrapping a shot around the goalie and into the net. The lone goal of the half was unassisted.
Princeton pressured after the goal but could not score and the game went to the half with the Pride ahead 1-0.
The Tigers came out of the half strong and controlled play for the first 25 minutes of the second half, coming very close to evening the score on several occasions. The closest chance came eight minutes into the half when Princeton was awarded a penalty stroke. Freshman Sarah Reinprecht took the attempt for Princeton and she was able to beat Cowperthwait, but not the goalpost as her shot bounced off the right post. Princeton had another good chance about seven minutes later senior Liz Miller played a free hit into the arc that freshman Elizabeth Williams redirected onto the net, but Cowperthwait was able to kick it out, one of seven second-half saves for the Hofstra goalie.
Hofstra extended its lead to 2-0 with an insurance goal with exactly 11 minutes remaining in the game. The goal came on Hofstra's first penalty corner of the game. Prior to that, Princeton had held a 13-0 edge in corners. The goal was scored by Leslie DeSimone and assisted by Sekayi Liburd and Pemba Ramdoo.
Hofstra added a final goal 1:38 later when Brit Blankmeyer scored off a Charlia Warner pass right in front of the Princeton cage.
Cowperthwait finished the game with eight saves while Nemeth had three for Princeton. Princeton outchances Hofstra 15-1 in corners and 18-8 in shots.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday night at No. 2 Maryland.
