Women's Volleyball Avenges Road Loss With Sweep Of Columbia
November 11, 2005 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON - The Princeton women's volleyball team avenged an earlier loss this season by winning the key points in a 3-0 home win over Columbia Friday night. The Tigers can go above the .500 mark by upsetting league champion Cornell Saturday on Senior Day.
The Tigers improved to 15-8, 6-6 in the league with the 30-27, 30-27, 30-24 victory.
Princeton opened the match on fire, jumping out to a big lead on the feisty Columbia squad. It was freshman Parker Henritze who keyed the early surge, and while Columbia battled back on its own serve, Princeton held on to the win.
The momentum from its comeback in the first game pushed Columbia to an early lead in the second game, but Lauren Grumet and Lindsey Ensign helped the Tigers work their way back into it. Grumet gave Princeton a lead at 24-23, and setter Jenny Senske added a kill of her own to open a 28-27 lead. A kill by Brittany Wood and a Columbia error gave Princeton the win, and the Tigers maintained control in the third game to clinch the match.
Henritze led Princeton with 15 kills, while Grumet added 13 kills and 12 digs. Middles Ensign and Wood combined for 19 kills and a .378 attack percentage. Senske paced the offense with 48 assists.
The defensive effort was led by libero Jenny McReynolds, who entered the match ranked second nationally in digs per game. She averaged close to nine digs per game, well above her senior average, and kept many points alive that Princeton eventually won.
Princeton will honor its senior class before Saturday's 4 p.m. showdown with Cornell. The Big Red clinched a share of the league title this week and could clinch the outright title Friday night at Penn.
