PRINCETON - While the major highlights of the crew year come during the spring races, the recently concluded fall portion of the Princeton crew schedule gave the Tiger faithful plenty of exciting things to anticipate in the Spring of 2006.
Following a historic victory for the heavyweights at the Head of the Charles, Princeton sent its freshmen to Philadelphia for the Head of the Schuylkill and its varsity boats just outside of its boathouse for the Princeton Chase.
Head of the Schuylkill
For the seventh straight year, the heavyweight freshman boat claimed the Men's College Frosh/Novice Eights title. Princeton came in at 13:11:00, more than two seconds ahead of second-place Penn's time of 13:13:04. The first finisher among all lightweight boats was also Princeton, which finished fourth overall in a time of 13:30:30. That was more than 12 seconds ahead of the Navy lightweights, which finished seventh overall.
The Princeton open women's freshmen matched their male counterparts with a victorious effort. The Tigers' time of 15:11:86 gave them a comfortable margin of victory over Columbia (15:20:23). The women's lightweights also had a good showing, finishing fifth overall in the combo race with a time of 15:58:31.

The Princeton Chase
Princeton dominated its first home event of the 2005-06 year, winning six of seven races at the regatta. The field was packed with some of the finest crews of the East, and the Tigers showed that they would be among the elite when the spring rolls around.
The women's open crew, which finished second in the 2005 NCAA championship race, won its race in 14:53.42, well ahead of second-place Virginia (15:20.44). The closest Ivy competitor, Brown, finished third in 15:31.60. The Princeton open four had a dramatic win, although it came over one of its own. The Princeton 'B' boat took the race in 16:36.96, while the 'A' boat claimed second in 16:39.64. No other competitor was within 30 seconds of either competitor. The heavyweight eight built on its dramatic win at the Head of the Charles by taking its race in 13:07.80, more than 23 seconds faster than second-place Yale. The heavyweight four (14:35.68) earned a comfortable margin of victory over Boston University, and the men's small boat (15:57.68) topped Cornell by nearly 20 seconds.
The men's lightweight four won the closest race of the day, defeating Harvard by exactly one second. Princeton won the race in 15:18.62, and the Tiger lightweight eight placed fifth in its race in a time of 13:43.00. That time was less than two seconds behind second-place Navy; only Penn was able to pull away with a winning time of 13:37.19.
