PRINCETON, N.J. - For the first two periods on Saturday evening at Baker Rink, the No. 8 Princeton women's hockey team (4-2-2, 2-1-1 ECACHL) played even with the No. 1 St. Lawrence Saints. It was fitting then that not long after St. Lawrence (9-0-2, 2-0-2) knocked in a goal midway through the final period, junior Kim Pearce scored to recreate a tie that remained unbroken.
Princeton, who finishes the ECACHL weekend with a win and a draw, became only the second team in St. Lawrence's 11 games to take a point from the Saints. St. Lawrence outshot Princeton, 31-26, with senior Roxanne Gaudiel making 30 saves to 25 for SLU's Meaghan Guckian.
St. Lawrence's goal came at the 8:16 mark of the final period as the Saints took advantage of a power play on a body checking penalty to junior Dina McCumber. In the circle to Gaudiel's left, Abbie Bullard fired the puck toward the net, where Marianna Locke was waiting to notch the first score of the game. It was the first time this season that any team has held the Saints to just one goal.
Princeton answered with 4:06 left on the clock in regulation. In front of a crowded net, Pearce scored her fourth goal of the year with assists from junior Laura Watt and freshman Annie Greenwood. The Tigers also used a power play opportunity to score and had a two-person advantage near the end of regulation to try and knock off the nation's top-ranked team, but St. Lawrence held and finished off the Princeton power play in overtime. Princeton had five shots in the five-minute overtime to two for the Saints. Penalties were about even, with Princeton players being sent to the box 10 times, one more than SLU.
The Tigers take a break from ECACHL play next weekend, when Mercyhurst comes to Baker Rink for games on Friday and Saturday.
