New York, N.Y.-Despite a surge from the Princeton backcourt and a new career-high for freshman Ariel Rogers, Columbia held on to win 61-57 Saturday night in Levien Gym. Princeton's record falls to 10-10 (2-5 Ivy), while Columbia improves to 11-10 (4-4 Ivy). After a three from Susan Kern, Columbia jumped up 54-50. Princeton looking to make a huge shot found one when junior Katy O'Brien sang a three-ball with 2:03 left on the game clock. Princeton made a stop defensively and sophomore Katy Digovich made her first basket of the half with 1:12 left giving the Tigers a 55-54 lead. Sue Altman made another three for the Lions with 50 seconds of action remaining and gave Columbia a 57-55 advantage. Both Becky Brown and Adia Revell made layups on the next possessions. Leading 59-57 Megan Griffith went to the foul line and made both shots, following a player control foul on Princeton sealing the victory for Columbia.
Columbia jumped out to a 13-6 lead six minutes into the game. Rogers entered the game and rattled off five quick points to bring the tigers within five, including a three-point play where she drove the lane and scored a tough layup drawing the foul. O`Brien made a run of her own and tied the score at 26 following the open baskets from deep downtown. After a stop on defense, the Tigers regained control of the ball. Rogers number was called as she once again penetrated and earned a chance to the charity stripe. She gave Princeton its first lead of the game, 27-26 with 3:36remaining in the first half. Following four points off Tiger turnovers, Columbia went back up 30-27. Nicole Lesko made a free throw for the Lion and Rogers scored on a mid-range jumper to go into halftime 31-29. Junior Lauren Nestor received a pass from sophomore Elyse Umeda at the top of the key and quickly turned and made a basket from downtown that put the first points on board in the second half for Princeton. A lay-up from Brown and two free throws from O'Brien put the Tigers up 36-35 with 16:22 remaining in the game. The game suffered a three-minute scoring drought until Columbia's Griffith made a jumper from the foul line. On Princeton's next possession Umeda penetrated and scored an open layup. Revell scored the next four points for the Lions and put her squad back up 43-40 with 8:24 left to play. Momentum stayed with Columbia as they tallied a 7-4 run after Sue Altman nailed a three from the left side of the court. Sophomore Casey Lockwood netted six straight points for the Tigers, including a steal off a rebound the resulted in a running hook shot. Princeton trailed 50-48 with just under four minutes remaining. Princeton hosts Yale at Jadwin Gym on Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
