Box Score
It was Senior Day at Baker Rink, but it was the underclassmen who stole the show on the ice. Sophomores Liz Keady and Laura Watt each tallied two goals, and freshman Marykate Oakley added two goals and an assist as Princeton (16-8-5 overall, 10-7-3 ECACHL) sent its seniors out as winners Saturday afternoon, trouncing Union 9-2.
With the win, the Tigers assured themselves of the fifth seed in the ECACHL playoffs, meaning they will travel to Yale next weekend for a best-of-three opening round series March 4, 5, and 6.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Dutchwomen in the first period for the second consecutive night. Oakley lit the lamp first with a goal at 6:23 off assists from Tarah Clark and senior Katharine Maglione. A Union tripping penalty later set up Watt's first score -- a power play goal at 8:46. Sarah Butsch and Watt later scored 1:02 apart to give Princeton the four-goal lead at the break, outshooting Union 18-2 in the period. Despite peppering new Dutchwomen goaltender Dana Smullyan with shots, it took over eight minutes for the Tigers to break through in the second period. Watt scored a power play goal at 8:24 to reopen the floodgates. Heather Jackson added a score at 10:04, and Oakley then made a great individual move around Smullyan on a one-on-one chance to push the Princeton lead to 7-0 after two periods with the Tigers enjoying a 41-4 advantage in shots.
Union scored twice in the third to again avoid the shutout, but Princeton responded with two goals of its own. Kate Gustafson knocked a loose puck past Tiger goalie Rebecca Allen at 3:41 during Union's best offensive push of the day. Keady later recorded a power play goal midway through the final period, and Alison Ralph found the net three minutes later to extend the lead to 9-1. Elise Nichols capped the scoring when she slid a wraparound past Allen, who could not locate the puck, at 16:16.
Princeton outshout Union 57-13 for the game. Roxanne Gaudiel made two saves in the first period to record the win. Allen saved nine in two periods of action. Lauren Carlson picked up the loss for the Dutchwomen.
Maglione's first period assist was the only point recorded by a Princeton senior. April Brown, who scored a hat trick Friday night, did not register a point in her final game at Baker Rink. Fellow senior Becky Stewart did not dress due to injury.
Exact times for next weekend's playoff series at Yale are still to be determined.
