Women's Water Polo Places 15th in 24-Team Gaucho Invitational

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The 19th-ranked Princeton women's water polo capped a good weekend against some of the nation's best competition with a 5-1 win over No. 15 UC San Diego to place 15th in the 24-team Gaucho Invitational at UC Santa Barbara. The tournament featured eighteen teams that are ranked in the Top-20 National Collegiate Water Polo Poll.
Princeton jumped to an early lead in Sunday morning's game with a pair of goals in each of the first two quarters. UC San Diego chipped a goal off the lead in the third, but the Tigers regained the four-goal advantage with a score in the final frame. Elyse Colgan, the Tigers' leading scorer, scored three goals, with Courtney Mee and Danielle Carlson each added a single goal. Natalie Kim played the entire game and made 13 saves.

After splitting its opening day games with No. 1 UCLA and No. 18 Arizona State. The Tigers dropped both games on Saturday in the relegation rounds of the tournament. Princeton met No. 7 Cal. The Bears jumped out to a cig start, leading 6-1 after one quarter and they extended it with three more in the second, leading to a 16-6 final score.
Jessica Harkins scored twice to lead the Tigers and others goals were added by Maegan Zitren, Megan Donahue, Carlson, and Samantha Shaughnessy. Kim played the first half and made four saves, while Madeline McCarthy made five saves in the second half.

In Princeton's second match on Saturday, the Tigers dropped a tight sudden-death overtime game to No. 12 UC Davis. The game was tied after two quarters, tied at the end of regulation and tied at the end of the first overtime. Princeton trailed by one after the first quarter, but a three-goal second quarter knottoed the game up at the half. Princeton also trailed entering the fourth quarter, but scored twice to force overtime.
Colgan had four goals to lead the Tigers and Zitren, Donahue, Karina Reyner and Jazmin Brown each added one. McCarthy made eight saves in the loss.
Match No. 40 (Group K)"Overall this was a good weekend," said Princeton head coach Luis Nicolao. "We had a chance to test ourselves with some of the best teams in the country and I was happy with the results. Princeton was 2-3 on the weekend and defeated two teams ranked ahead of it in the polls. Princeton is 9-4 on the season and returns to action next weekend against Salem International, Maryland and Bucknell. All three games will take place at Salem International.
