San Jose, Calif. -- Freshman Kristen Schaus recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts against Santa Clara in the first game of the National Invitation Tournament, Friday. Princeton fell 5-4 in eight innings and are 4-2 on the season. Princeton trailed 2-0 in the third inning until senior Melissa Finley doubled and drove in junior Cristina Cobb-Adams, who also doubled to get in base. Junior Erin Snyder hit her second homer of the season as the next batter and gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Princeton scored again in the fifth, when junior Amanda Erickson hit a single that allowed Finley to score her second run of the day. With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Bronco's Kelley Johnson knotted the score at four after Shannon Linerud made it to base off an error. The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as Betsy Allaway stepped to the plate with bases loaded and two outs, but was grounded out at first. Jillian Cassel scored the lone run for Santa Clara in the extra inning and sealed the game. Liz Courter picked up the win for the Broncos, while Kristen Schaus fell to 1-1 on the season.
