Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Wills Sweney allowed just two hits in seven innings and six Tigers had two hits as the Princeton baseball team defeated Seton Hall 10-0 Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Junior Andrew Salini and sophomore Sal Iacono each had two RBIs in the win.
Princeton (11-15) got things started with two runs in the first. A leadoff walk by sophomore Aaron Prince and a single to center by senior Will Venable put two on for Salini. He hit a sac fly to score Prince and Venable scored a batter later when junior Ryan Eldridge doubled off the wall in right field.
That gave Sweney and the Tiger pitching staff a lead it would not relinquish as Princeton posted its second shutout of the season. Sweney pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits. He struck out six and walked four. Neither of the two hits left the infield as he improved to 1-3 on the season. Senior Worth Lumry and freshman Steven Miller each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Princeton added three runs to its lead in the fifth inning. Salini singled up the middle to leadoff and after an out, senior Adam Balkan singled to center to put two runners on. That brought up Iacono who hit a two-run triple off the wall in right center. Iacono then scored on a sac fly from junior Zach Wendkos. Princeton added four more in the sixth. Junior Matthew Becker hit a leadoff double over third base and into the left field corner. Becker then scored on a single by Prince. Venable then hit Princeton's second triple of the game to score Prince and Venable scored when Salini hit a line drive over the second baseman. Seton Hall got a double play to put two outs on the board, but a single by Balkan and a single by Iacono accounted for a run as the centerfielder mishandled and the shortstop overthrew the ball to let Balkan score.
Princeton added a final run in the seventh inning when freshman Micah Kaplan, pinch-hitting, hit a solo home run over the wall in left field. It was the first homer of his career.
Seton Hall's (8-20) Mark Irwin took the loss after only pitching one inning and allowing two runs.
Princeton returns to action this weekend with a pair of Ivy League and Gehrig Division doublehaders at Penn.
