PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Despite outscoring Rutgers 13-6, the Princeton softball team split a doubleheader against the Scarlet Knights at the RU Softball Complex today. Senior Melissa Finley, sophomore Calli Jo Varner and freshman Lauren Bierman all recorded home runs in the 12-3 win of game one. In game two Princeton only managed one run, falling 3-1. The Tigers record stands at 25-10 on the season.
Princeton rallied its largest outpour of the season by scoring all five innings of the first game ending the game due to the nine-run mercy rule.
The Tigers largest lead was gained in the third inning, where Princeton scored four runs before earning an out. Finley patiently accepted a walk to open the third inning and was moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Varner. Freshman Beth Dalmut, then, hit a double to right-center field to drive in Finley. The next batter, sophomore Stephanie Steel traded spots with Dalmut on the next pitch with a double to right-center field of her own. Freshman Lauren Bierman then sent the first pitch from Christina Gillman over left-center field for her first home run of the season. Junior Cristina Cobb-Adams' triple drove sophomore Tiffany Andras in for the fifth score of the inning and seventh of the game. Princeton led 7-0 at the end of three innings. Dalmut's sacrifice to second base scored Cobb-Adams for the solo-run in the first inning. Bierman, who hit a single right up the middle in the top of the second, scored off a sacrifice by junior Lindsay Motal to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Then in the fourth inning, Varner hit her seventh homer over the left field fence.
Jessica Cien ended Princeton's shutout in the bottom of the fourth after a hit by Maggie Geraldi was dropped in right field by the Tigers Christine Royland hit a home run with a runner on base to left field to tally the third run for the Scarlet Knights.
Ries opened the fifth with a lined shot to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cobb-Adams stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and bounced a double off the center field wall to bring in Ries and Andras. Finley hit a bomb high over center field with one out on the board to record the 12th and final run of the game.
Varner (4-1) pitched five innings allowing five hits and three runs, while collecting six strikeouts. Gillman took the loss for Rutgers with eight hits and six runs against her in 2.1 innings.
The Scarlet Knights threatened to add more points to the board in the bottom of the fifth, as Kristin Madoch hit a double putting runners on second and third base. Varner, then, rallied a strikeout and sophomore Tiffany Wilson made a catch in left field to end the game.
In game two, Princeton's lone score came in the fifth inning as Ries crossed home plate after Cobb-Adams fisted a single to center field. Ries advanced to base and received two bases due to an error by the second baseman.
Kristin Madoch hit a lead off homer for Rutgers with the second pitch of the day from sophomore Amelia Runyan. Then, after loading the bases with only one out, Runyan rose to the challenge and struck out two batters in the first inning.
Rutgers second run came as Stephanie Johannsen drove in Xaymara Rodriguez with a single that rolled to right field in the second inning. Later, in the fifth, Jenny Card recorded the final run of the game with a solo-homer.
Princeton loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but couldn't rally a hit to send anyone home. In the game the Tigers left 10 runners stranded on base.
Runyan (0-1) dropped her first game of the season with six hits and two runs scored against her, while freshman Kristen Schaus, who relieved Runyan in the fourth, pitched three innings giving up two hits and one run. Jessica Crosby (2-6) earned the win for Rutgers, holding the Tigers to one run off 10 hits.
