PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Amanda Erickson led the Princeton softball team to a split against Harvard, as she went 3-3 at bat, scored two runs and drove in two batters in game two of Princeton's doubleheader. The Tigers dropped the day's first game 1-0 in 10 innings, before rallying a 9-0 win in the second contest. Princeton improved to 26-13 overall and 6-2 in the Ivy League, while the Crimson slipped to 11-16-1 on the season and 4-2 in the conference.
Princeton's offense scored two runs in the third inning before the Crimson were able to put an out on the board. Freshman Beth Dalmut stepped to the plate with Erickson on base and collected two strikes. Then, with the third pitch from Harvard's Becky Voaklander, Dalmut sent her third homer of the season to center field. Princeton held a 5-0 lead after three innings of action.
The Tiger's 31 home runs this season is one more than the 2003 squad and is the program's second-best output since the 2002 team (36).
Erickson's first hit of the game was a single in the first inning that sailed past the third baseman, allowing senior Melissa Finley to score. Finley advanced to base with a hit to left field.
In the bottom of the second, senior Ty Ries hit a hard shot off the third baseman's glove for a base hit and junior Cristina Cobb-Adams' single to right field advanced Ries to third. Junior Lindsay Motal recorded a bouncing single up the middle, as the next batter and scored Ries. Cobb-Adams scored with Finley's fly ball that landed in center field. Princeton rounded out the scoring with four runs off three hits in the bottom of the fourth. Erickson tallied a double to left field to score Motal, who had a lead off walk. Freshman Lauren Bierman followed with a single that trickled past the third baseman allowing junior Erin Snyder to cross home plate. Ries, then, earned two RBI with a single that skid away from the second baseman. Bierman and Erickson scored runs on the play.
Ries was 2-2 and scored one run in the nine-run shutout.
Freshman Kristen Schaus (10-6) allowed four hits in her fifth shutout of the season and struck out seven batters. Schaus contained the Crimson in the first inning, with runners at third and second with a strikeout and a pop up to second base. Michelle McAteer took the loss for Harvard allowing three runs off four hits.
In the first game the pitchers battled against the batters to keep the game scoreless into the 10th inning. Snyder struck out Harvard's first four batters and had a no-hitter until the fifth inning. Harvard's first hit was a sharp shot to center field. A sacrifice bunt by the next batter put the Crimson in scoring position. Snyder, then, fanned the next two batters.
For the Crimson, Shelly Madick posted a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Sophomore Tiffany Andras recorded the first hit for Princeton with a single to center field. Bierman and Finley were both walked to load the bases. Madick rallied a pop up and strikeout to hold off the Tigers.
Princeton's defense had collected two outs in the 10th inning before Beth Sabin hit a solo home run to center field for Harvard.
Snyder (12-3) fanned 21 batters and allowed three hits, while Madick allowed just two hits in 9.1 innings.
The Tigers host a doubleheader against Dartmouth at noon tomorrow.
