Baseball Drops 15-7 Decision to Monmouth

West Long Branch, N.J, - Monmouth scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead en route to a 15-7 win over the Princeton baseball team Thursday afternoon at Monmouth Field. Junior Ryan Eldridge was 4 for 5 in the game while senior Adam Balkan had a pair of RBIs.
Princeton (9-12, 4-0 Ivy) went ahead 2-0 in the first inning with a pair of runs and held the lead though the third inning. With one away in the first, senior Will Venable bunted for a single and went to second when junior Andrew Salini was hit with a pitch. With two runners on base, Eldridge singled to right field to score Venable and then Salini scored as the Monmouth right fielder misplayed the ball.
Monmouth (8-14) jumped ahead in the third and bulit a 12-2 lead through the fifth inning. Monmouth scored five times in the third, twice in the fourth, and added another five in the fifth.
The Tigers got three runs back in the six. Eldridge hit a leadoff single to right and moved to second on Balkan's walk. Sophomore Sal Iacono then singled to left field to load the bases. Monmouth was able to get the next out without having a runs score, but then junior Stephen Wendell singled to left field to score Eldridge. With the bases still loaded, junior Mathew Becker walked to plate a run and the final run of the inning scored when sophomore Aaron Prince hit a sac fly. Monmouth got a run back in the bottom of the sixth and Princeton answered back with one in the top of the seventh. Salini hit a leadoff single, then advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single from Balkan.
Princeton got its final run in the ninth inning. Venable, Salini and Eldridge led off with three-straight singles. Balkan then hit a sac fly to score a run. Princeton continued to threaten as Iacono was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, but Monmouth got a double play to end the inning and game.
Sophomore Wills Sweney took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in two innings. He was pulled in the third and senior Worth Lumry came in. Lumry pitched two-and-two-thirds allowing seven runs. Freshman Steven Miller allowed a run in one inning, senior Brian Kappel pitched a scoreless inning and senior Chad Tongue allowed two runs in the final inning.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday with an Ivy League doubleheader at Dartmouth.
