PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Calli Jo Varner hit two bombs to left field on a windy afternoon at 1895 Field, in the doubleheader against Lehigh and secured a two-game sweep, while freshman Beth Dalmut recorded her first home run of the season in the day's first contest. Princeton defeated the Mountain Hawks 9-1 in the first game and 3-1 in the second game. The Tigers improve to 21-8 overall, while Lehigh fell to 23-5 on the season.
Varner stepped to the plate with only one out and the game tied at one in the seventh inning of the second game. Tiffany Wilson was at first base as the pinch runner for junior Amanda Erickson, who was walked. Varner needed only two pitches, as she sent a long-high fly ball over the left field wall and ended the second game at 3-1, in favor of Princeton, with her fourth homer of the season.
The Tigers first run of the game came in the fifth inning when Varner hit her first bomb of the day to left field, tying the ball game at one apiece.
A base hit up the middle with runners at the corners for Lehigh's Whitney Schenbeck, scored the game's first run and gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Princeton's defense kept the Mountain Hawks from opening up scoring in the game. In the seventh inning freshman Kristen Schaus only faced three batters to hold Lehigh scoreless. The first batter popped up to Erickson at third base. Erickson, then, quickly fielded a bunt and gunned down the second batter at first base. Erickson ended Lehigh's hopes of scoring, as she grounded out the third batter. Schaus (8-4) allowed one run on seven hits and struck out seven batters. Kate Arico of Lehigh tallied four hits, three runs and two strikeouts as pitcher.
Princeton's high scoring offense ended the first game with a mercy rule in the sixth inning.
Senior Ty Ries led off the third inning with a double to center field that bounced off the wall. Freshman Lauren Bierman, then, hit a bunt that sent Ries to third, but an error by the first baseman allowed her to score. Later that inning, junior Erin Snyder was walked with bases loaded granting junior Lindsay Motal a free trip home. Princeton led 2-0 at the end of the third.
Dalmut recorded her first homer as the lead off batter in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth inning Dalmut recorded her second RBI of the day with a base hit that skipped to right field allowing Snyder to score. Ries, who stepped to the plate with bases loaded, also hit a single to right field, but it was lost on the bounce and sent Varner and Erickson home. Princeton led 6-0 at the end of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, both Motal and sophomore Tiffany Andras scored on Snyder's hit to right field. Lehigh tried to throw out Motal advancing home from third but the catcher lost possession of the ball. Andras took notice of a scoring opportunity and quickly crossed the plate before the Mountain Hawks could find the ball. Erickson's double to centerfield ended the game as senior Melissa Finley crossed home plate.
For the Mountain Hawks, Taryn Hanley, who advanced to base after being walked, scored off a wild pitch late in the sixth inning.
Snyder (11-2) pitched six innings and allowed four hits and one run. Emily Ling took the loss for Lehigh and recorded three runs off three hits in four innings pitched.
Princeton heads to New York for doubleheaders against Columbia and Cornell on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m., respectively.
