NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Pitchers Erin Snyder and Kristen Schaus participated in a set of duals from the mound at Baker Field on Columbia's campus. Snyder and Schaus combined to allow 10 hits in 24 innings of action, as the Tigers split a pair of 1-0 games against the Lions. Princeton's record stands at 22-9 on the season and 3-1 in the league, while Columbia improved to 14-18 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Snyder had a no-hitter into the fourth inning of the first game and allowed only five hits in 10 innings of action. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Snyder threw nothing but strikes and sent Columbia out of the inning, three up-three down. With two runners on base and no outs, Snyder put away the Lions with two strikeouts and a fly out to right field in the bottom of the ninth. As the lead off batter in the 10th inning, sophomore Calli Jo Varner was walked by Columbia's Jackie Adelfio. Sophomore Stephanie Steel replaced Varner at first and freshman Beth Dalmut's sacrifice bunt moved Steel to second base. Senior Ty Ries who battled with Adelfio at the plate hit a bouncing single to left field sending Steel in for the winning run. On the defensive end in the bottom of the 10th, Shelle Borton opened up for the Lions and hit a double to centerfield. Borton, then, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by the next batter. Junior Erin Snyder, then, struck out the next batter and got a groundout from junior Cristina Cobb-Adams to Dalmut at first to end the game.
Columbia had a chance to score again in the seventh inning, as Kimberly Krisman advanced to base after being hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ciji Rich. However, Krisman was left on base as Princeton caught two fly balls to retire the inning. Snyder (12-2) won her eighth-straight game and tallied 14 strikeouts in the contest, while Adelfio (9-7) allowed three hits, one run and recorded seven strikeouts in the game. In the day's second game Schaus threw 14 pitches, including 11 strikes, against her first batter en route to the first out of the game. Schaus finished the game with five hits against her and tallied eight strikeouts in 13.2 innings. The game could have ended either way in the 14th as senior Melissa Finley doubled to centerfield to put the Tigers in scoring position with no outs, but Princeton was unable to get another hit in the inning. Columbia's Lexie Costic, then, reached on an error and stole second on the first pitch to Marconi, who was struck out by Schaus. Krisman 's double to centerfield scored Costic for the winning run. In the fifth inning the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs, due to a single from Ries, Andras reached on an error by the second baseman and Motal was walked. However, Princeton was unable to score leaving all three runners on base. Down one out in the bottom of the seventh, Marisa Marconi got on base after being hit by a pitch from Schaus. She later moved to second after the following batter hit a sacrifice bunt. Columbia's next batter hit a high fly ball that Cobb-Adams gave chase to and sent the game into extra innings. The 11th inning showed promise for the Tigers, as Motal was walked as the lead off batter. Sophomore Tiffany Wilson took over on base for Motal and was moved to second off a sacrifice by Cobb-Adams. Snyder hit a base hit to right field and Wilson took off for home, as the Lion's Shelle Borton blocked the plate. Wilson was called out trying to reach around the catcher ending the inning. Princeton faces Cornell in a doubleheader, tomorrow, at noon in Ithaca, N.Y.
