TUCSON, Ariz.--Junior Erin Snyder fanned six batters in the first game of the NCAA Regional 3 playoff, but the Princeton softball was unable to come back from a four-run first inning by Oklahoma State. The Tigers fell 6-1 in front of a crowd of 552 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium and will face Lehigh at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
After OSU scored four runs off four hits in the first, Princeton (35-19) responded by loading the bases in the top of the second. The Tigers got on the board when Jessica Hoppock hit junior Cristina Cobb-Adams with a pitch. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Hoppock struck out the next batter, but not without a battle.
OSU (34-22) scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a sizeable early lead, with a run-scoring single by Courtney Totte, a two-run double by Dominique Van Nortwick and an RBI single by Megan Carey. Princeton also had one error and two wild pitches that aided the Cowgirls' threat.
The Tigers had another chance to score in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Cobb-Adams dropped a double down the right field line and freshman Lauren Bierman hit a single past a stretching third baseman. Senior Melissa Finley, then, hit a sacrifice fly to left field that sent Cobb-Adams home off the tag. However, Oklahoma State's Megan Carey gunned down Cobb-Adams at the plate for a double play.
The Cowgirls' scored later in the fifth with a home run from Carey, with a runner on and take a 6-1 lead.
Hoppock (14-11) struck out nine batters and allowed seven hits in the win, while Snyder (16-5) allowed five earned runs off 10 hits in 4.2 innings.Princeton meets Lehigh at 4 p.m. (MST) Saturday, May 21. If the Tigers win, they will immediately play the loser of the Arizona/Oklahoma St. game.
