NEW YORK - Thanks to strong performances in field event finals, and a near win in the 10,000 meters from junior Frank Macreery, the Princeton men's track team holds the lead after day one of the 2005 Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Columbia's Wien Stadium.
In the only final of the day in the track events, Macreery took the lead on the last lap of the 10,000, but unfortunately was passed in the final seconds and finished a close second. Still, the Tigers ended the day with 42 points, ahead of second-place Penn with 35 points and third-place Dartmouth with 29 points.
Drew Geant had a season-best performance in the hammer to win that event and earn 10 points for Princeton, recording a toss of 177 feet, four inches. Dwaine Banton was a close second in the long jump, leaping 24 feet, 6 1/4 inches, while Andrew Park earned points for the Tigers in the pole vault, finishing third with a jump of 16 feet, 3/4 of an inch.
Will Byrd of Princeton also leads the decathlon competition after five events with 3493 points.
Princeton qualified three runners for the 400 meter final, Mike Kopp, Justin Reed and Rich Stewart, while Banton qualified for the final in the 100.
