NEW YORK - Senior Austin Smith won a hotly-contested 5,000-meter run as the Princeton men's track team finished in a close fourth place at the 2005 Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Columbia's Wien Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Princeton's 95 team points were just one behind the 96 of Dartmouth and Penn, who tied for second with 96 points. Cornell won its third straight outdoor Heptagonal championship, finishing with an impressive 133 points.
Smith finished the 5,000 meters in 14:30.90, outpacing five other competitors who all finished within six seconds of that lead time. He joined thrower Drew Geant, who won the hammer throw Saturday, as Princeton event winners at the 2005 Outdoor Heps.
The Tigers also got a strong performance in the decathlon from Will Byrd, who finished second behind Dartmouth's Andrew Hall with 6664 points. Kent Siri finished in fourth place in that event for Princeton.
In the high jump, senior Mike Weishuhn continued an outstanding outdoor season with a second-place finish. Weishuhn and a competitor from Brown both cleared 6 10 3/4 on the bar, but Weishuhn placed second due to a later clearance of that height.
Princeton's strong 4X400 team of Rich Stewart, Mike Kopp, Brian Shields and Justin Reed finished in third palce in that event Sunday. In the steeplechase, Eric Bates was a fourth-place finisher for the Tigers. Josh Probst threw the javelin 204 feet, 7 inches to finish in fourth place in that event for Princeton.
On the women's side, the Tigers finished in sixth place, compiling 54.5 points. Cornell won its fourth straight Heps outdoor meet, outdistancing the competition with 177.5 overall points.
The Tigers had two strong third-place finishes individually on Sunday in the women's meet. Cack Ferrell was third in the 3,000 meters, running that race in 9:53.49, while Molly Jones was third in the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 2 1/4 inches.
Chanel Lattimer, a senior, finished fourth in the 100 meters final in a time of 11.98, while Catha Mullen was fourth in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:32.59. Brooke Minor's high jump of 5-5 was good for fifth place in that event.
Princeton will host the ECAC and IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at Weaver Track & Field Stadium.
