Princeton, N.J. - The 2005-06 Princeton Women's Hockey schedule was recently announced by Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal. The schedule features 20 ECAC Hockey League games and nine non-conference games against teams from Hockey East, the WCHA and College Hockey America.
After an Oct. 22 scrimmage against former league travel-partner Yale, Princeton jumps into action at the Nichols School Tournament the final weekend in October. In what will be a homecoming for the three Tigers that attended the Buffalo school - junior Dina McCumber and sophomores Brittany Salmon and Marykate Oakley - Princeton will meet Hockey East foes Boston College and Vermont. Princeton is unbeaten all-time against both opponents, sporting a 16-0-2 record against BC and a 9-0 record against Vermont, which was a league opponent up until last season, but has since joined Hockey East. Both BC and Vermont will also face Niagara at the round-robin tournament.
The Tigers continue their six-game stretch away from home to start the season the following weekend when they open ECACHL play at Dartmouth and Harvard. One of the league's new travel-partner pairings, Harvard and Dartmouth will be a tough early season test for the Tigers. From there, it is on to a non-conference series at Ohio State on Nov. 11-12 before the home opener. Princeton is 2-3 all-time against Ohio State and last faced the Buckeyes in the 2002-03 season.
Princeton's home-opening comes Nov. 18 and 19 when Clarkson and St. Lawrence visit Baker Rink. The Tigers took two from Clarkson in its first league season last year, while St. Lawrence topped the Tigers on two occasions. The 10-game homestand continues the weekend after Thanksgiving when Mercyhurst visits Baker Rink for two games. The Lakers are one of five NCAA tournament teams that Princeton will face in 2005-06, along with Harvard, St. Lawrence, Dartmouth and Providence. The Tigers close the first half of the season with five games in a nine-day span in early December. All home games, the stretch starts with a conference series with Cornell and Colgate. Princeton swept Cornell last season and fought to a pair of ties with Colgate. A Tuesday night game with league-newcomer and Princeton's new travel-partner Quinnipiac will be played on Dec. 6, before the Tigers host Wayne State for two games on Dec. 9-10. The game against Quinnipiac will be the team's first meeting since a Princeton win in the 2001-02 season, while the Tigers will meet Wayne State after a year-hiatus in the series. Both Wayne State games will be played at 3 p.m., preceding Princeton's men's hockey games at Baker Rink.
The Tigers open 2006 on Jan. 2, with a Monday-night game against Providence to cap their 10-game streak of home games. Princeton was 1-0-1 against the Friars last season and is unbeaten in eight meetings with Providence. Princeton takes to the road on Jan. 6 for the first of seven-straight road league games. The stretch begins with another new set of travel-partners, at Yale and Brown, and proceeds to central New York to face Colgate and Cornell before the exam break.
Princeton comes out of exams with a Tuesday-night game on the last day of January at Quinnipiac, then travels to St. Lawrence and Clarkson to begin February.
Princeton plays two of its final three series on home ice leading into the ECACHL playoffs. Harvard and Dartmouth visit Baker Rink on Feb. 10-11 and then Princeton visits Union for two games on Feb. 17-18. The regular season concludes Feb. 24-25 when Brown and Yale come to Baker Rink.
As in the past, the top-eight teams will qualify for the postseason, with the top four hosting the bottom four in a three-game quarterfinal series. The semifinal and championships games will be single-elimination at a campus site yet to be determined.
