Aug. 16, 2005
While most of the Princeton students are enjoying summer vacation, the members of the crew program haven't skipped a beat since a highly successful spring. Members of both the men's and women's programs have represented Princeton this summer in several international competitions, and they have temporarily traded their Orange and Black for Red, White and Blue.
Senior World Championships
Key members of the 2005 national runner-up men's heavyweight and women's open crews will compete for the US when the Senior Worlds begin On August 28 in Gifu, Japan. Rising senior Steve Coppola, who led the men to a second-place finish at both Easterns and IRAs, will compete in the Men's 8+. Rising senior Caroline Lind, who also led Princeton to second-place finishes at Easterns and NCAAs, will race in both the 8+ and the 2-; the 8+ will be coached by head women's coach Lori Dauphiny. In her last two years at Princeton, Dauphiny has led the Tigers to 22 consecutive dual victories.
Men's rower Alex Hearne, who also competed at the U-23 Worlds, has been selected as an alternate for the U.S. team. Several Princeton graduates will also compete; John Wachter and Simon Carcagno will compete in the LM4-, while Lia Pernell will compete in the W2x.
Heavyweight crew coach Curtis Jordan will also travel to Japan and coach the LM2x.
U-23 World Championships
Hearne began his summer of international competition in Amsterdam when he competed for the U.S. in the 4-, which was coached by new men's lightweight coach Greg Hughes. That boat barely missed the medal stand, placing fourth overall. Teammates Pier Deroo and Glenn Ochal both competed in the 4x and finished 12th. Junior World Championships
While the current strength of the program has been shown in the previous world championships, the Junior Worlds gave an indication of the strength of the program's future. Incoming freshman Neil Stanga led the U.S. 8+ to a Junior World Championship against the host German team. The gold-medal boat was coached by former Princeton rower Marty Crotty, who will replace Hughes as the assistant coach for the heavyweight crew program. Another incoming freshman, Matt Evans, raced for the Great Britain crew.
On the Women's side, three incoming Princetonians were members of the U.S. junior team this summer. Alie Fishman, Annie Gayman and Caitlin McGrath were members of the 8+ that finished fourth.
