Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton field hockey team travels north to New Hampshire and Massachusetts this weekend for a pair of important games at Dartmouth and Northeastern. On Saturday, Princeton will look to improve to 2-0 in Ivy action with a win against the Big Green, while Sunday's game versus the Huskies will be Princeton's fourth game against a ranked opponent this season.
The Tigers posted their first win of the 2005 season last weekend with a 5-1 defeat of Yale. The win also lifted Princeton to 1-0 in the Ivy League. Senior Lauren Ehrlichman scored the first three Princeton goals in the game, while sophomore Sarah Yuki added the final two. Junior Juliana Simon made one save in net to claim the win.
A day later, the Tigers dropped a hard-fought game to Connecticut 4-2. Freshman Kristin Schwab scored her first collegiate goal in the game and senior Hillary Schmidt added Princeton's second tally.
Ehrlichman was named the league's Player of the Week for her performance over the weekend, which also included an assist in the UConn game. She is also the league's leading scorer with nine points. Princeton will have to do it without her this weekend however, as Ehrlichman is competing for the United States in the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile. The U.S. was the ninth seed entering the tournament and topped eight-seeded England yesterday 4-2 and tied the Netherlands, the tournament's top-seed, 2-2 earlier today.
Yuki's four points ranks her second on the team in total points. Hillary and Paige Schmidt come next with three points apiece. Princeton's game on Saturday against Dartmouth pits two of the league's 1-0 teams. Dartmouth is 2-0 on the season, having defeated Kent State and Brown. Harvard defeated Penn 1-0 last week and is the other team that is 1-0 in the league. Stef Miller has three points and leads the Big Green in scoring.
Last season Dartmouth posted a 3-1 win over the Tigers at Class of '52 Stadium, snapping a 15-year losing streak at the hands of the Tigers. The Tigers are 17-7-2 all-time against Dartmouth and are 9-4-1 in games played at Dartmouth.
On Sunday, the Tigers will be in Boston to face Northeastern. The teams will meet for the second straight season as the Huskies posted a 2-1 win last season in Princeton. There have been three meetings all-time between the schools with Northeastern holding the 2-1 series edge.
The Huskies will be the fourth team that Princeton faces this season that is ranked in STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll. American, Princeton's first opponent of the season is ranked fifth, Penn State is seventh, Connecticut is 11th and Northeastern is 13th. After the Northeastern game, Boston University, which is currently ranked 20th, is Princeton's only remaining opponent that is currently nationally ranked. The Tigers were listed in the also receiving votes section of the poll.
Northeastern is 4-1 on the season and has defeated Ohio, UMass, Providence and Holy Cross. The Huskies lost to Indiana and play Boston University on Friday night. Whitney Shean's 13 points lead the Huskies in scoring.
