PRINCETON - The annual Constable Invitational was held at Princeton University this weekend, and it featured many of the top players in women's squash. While a pair of Yale Bulldogs came away with titles, including the nation's best player, but one pair of Tiger freshmen battled for one of the draw titles.
6.0 Draw
The top draw of the Constable Invitational belonged to Yale University, as the top four players for the Bulldogs made the semifinals, and top-ranked and defending Constable and national champion Michelle Quibell prevailed as the champion.
Princeton got one win in the top draw, as fourth-seeded Claire Rein-Weston claimed a 3-1 win over Yale's Lauren McCrery in the first round. Rein-Weston battled Yale's Amy Gross in the quarterfinals and fell in a hard-fought match 10-9, 8-10, 9-6, 9-5.
Princeton's Carly Grabowski and Christina Fast also made the top draw, but neither could make it out of the first round.
5.5 Draw
Princeton put three in the semifinals of the 5.5 draw, but unfortunately for the home Tigers, it was another Yale Bulldog who came out on top.
The top of the draw belonged to the Orange and Black, as top-seeded Casey Riley and fourth-seeded Marilla Hiltz made their way to a semifinal showdown. The experience of Hiltz, who played No. 2 for Princeton last season, came through in a 9-0, 9-7, 9-1 win that sent her to the championship match.
Third-seeded Margaret Kent played the match of the draw, topping Yale's Nicky Shields 9-2, 7-9, 8-10, 9-3, 9-0 in a hard-fought semifinal match. Fellow Bulldog Kate Rapisarda had an easier path to the semifinals, winning two matches by identical 3-0 scores, and she took advantage by beating Kent 9-6, 10-8, 9-2. She carried that momentum into the final and topped Hiltz 9-6, 9-5, 9-2. Second-seeded Lena Neufeld was upset in the first round 4-9, 9-2, 9-3, 9-5 against Trinity's Anna Detter.
4.5 Draw
The largest field of the Constable Invitational came in the 4.5 draw, but when the dust settled, there were two Princeton freshmen battling for the title.
Four Princeton players made the second round in the top half of the draw: Martha Kelley, Anne Erdman, Anina Nolan, Aly Brady. Nolan and Brady advanced to a quarterfinal showdown against each other with 3-0 wins, and Brady pulled out that match 2-9, 9-2, 9-0, 9-1. Brady then advanced to the championship match with a 9-6, 9-0, 9-3 win over Yale's Elisabeth Hill.
Ann Vale made the second round at the bottom half of the draw, but lost in that round. That left freshman Maggie O'Toole, who won her first three matches 3-0 and then topped Trinity's Siobhan Knight 9-6, 9-6, 7-9, 2-9, 9-1 in the semifinal. The all-Princeton freshman final went to Aly Brady 9-5, 9-4, 8-10, 9-4.
