NEW YORK - Princeton distance standouts Frank Macreery and David Nightingale each won their respective events and the Tigers also had several other strong performances at the "Ivy League vs. Big East" meet held Friday night at the 168th Street Armory in New York City.
The meet featured Cornell, Penn and Princeton from the Ivy League against UConn, Rutgers and Seton Hall from the Big East.
Macreery's win was in the 5,000 meters, which he ran in an impressive 14:22.82 to easily outdistance Penn's Ian Foley by nearly 10 seconds. Justin Pines finished third in that event for the Tigers in 14:39.92.
Nightingale won the 3,000 meters for Princeton later in the evening, running the 15 laps at the Armory in 8:14.56. Teammate Michael Maag was right behind in second place in a time of 8:17.81.
Princeton also had strong performances in another distance event, the mile, with James O'Toole finishing second and Brett Campfield placing third. Each runner ran the eight laps in under 4:11.
Ray Lenihan continued a strong indoor season for Princeton in the 60-meter hurdles, posting the fastest qualifying time (8.06) before finishing second in the final to UConn's Basil Campbell in the same time.
In the field events, Princeton got notable performances in both the weight throw and the long jump. Alex Pessala's toss of 17.62 meters (57 feet, 10 inches) was good for second place in the 35-lb. weight event, while Derek Davis's leap of 7.13 meters in the long jump (23 feet, 3 3/4 inches) was good for fourth place and four points in that event.
